Videos: 2011 Southern California Symposium on Familial Alzheimer's Disease

The 2011 Southern California Symposium on Familial Alzheimer's Disease: PATHWAYS to TREATMENT was done collaboratively between USC, UCLA, UCI, and UCSD and provided a forum to discuss progress in and future directions for research in the development of treatments for persons destined to develop familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) due to a specific mutation (the A431E mulation) in the gene encoding for Presenilin-1 (PSEN1).

2011 Symposium on Familial Alzheimer's Disease: PATHWAYS to TREATMENT

Thursday, March 24, 2011

This conference provided a forum to discuss progress in and future directions for research in the development of treatments for persons destined to develop familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD). Families of Mexican origin residing in California, Texas, Chicago, Mexico and various other places suffer from autosomal dominant FAD due to a specific mutation (the A431E mulation) in the gene encoding for Presenilin-1 (PSEN1).

Over the last ten years, collaborative work among USC, UCLA, UCI, and UCSD has resulted in great progress in characterizing the clinical, imaging, and biochemical changes occurring in these families. Persons inheriting this mutation, in whom the ultimate development of AD can be predicted with essentially 100% certainty 20 years prior to the onset of clinical disease, provide a unique opportunity to test therapeutic interventions to prevent or delay onset of illness.
